After studying Civil Engineering, at the University of Waterloo, John McArthur entered the insurance business as an independent adjuster trainee in Chilliwack, B.C. He graduated as a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada and his career progressed rapidly, through a number of claims and general management assignments, resulting in his appointment as CEO of SAFECO Canada in 1975.
For the next 17 years, under John’s leadership, SAFECO was an industry trend setter and selected as a case study, by Wilfred Laurier University, for consistently outperforming the competition in service, growth and bottom line results.
In 1991, John negotiated SAFECO Canada’s sale to The Dominion of Canada and was responsible for merging the field operations of the two companies. He then joined ITT Hartford Canada in 1992, as President and CEO, with a mandate to restructure and rightsize the company as an acquisition target. On completion of this challenging assignment, he returned to B.C.
In 1996 John co-founded AMAC Consultants Inc. (“AMAC”), a Vancouver based insurance management consulting firm, specializing in Acquisitions, Mergers and Executive Search within the financial services sector. John is accredited by the Supreme Court of British Columbia as an expert witness on the evaluation of insurance brokers and books of business.
Throughout his career John has been very active in industry affairs having served as President of the Insurance Institute of Ontario, Chairman of The Insurance Crime Prevention Bureau, Chairman of Canadian Industrial Risks Insurers and on the board of directors of all the major industry trade and technical associations including I.A.O., V.I.C.C., C.S.I.O., U.A.B., the Facility Association and I.B.C. During his 11 years as a director, of the Insurance Bureau of Canada, he served successively as chairman of the Public Relations, Provincial Legislative and Liaison and Claims committees and latterly as a member of the executive committee of I.B.C.’s board.
John has been a major influence on the careers of many current industry leaders and is most proud of the fact that over 150 of his former SAFECO and Hartford associates now hold the rank of Vice President or above including the Presidents and CEO or COOs of five significant players.
